We come into this world as emotional beings. Children are deeply emotional and spiritual little creatures. Over time they are taught to move into a place of intellect, rationalisation, and logical thinking because that is where their parents operate from. The parents were taught that logic is much more predictable and comfortable than emotions and therefore a safer place from which to operate .
The further we separate ourselves from our emotions the more potential problems we create. Negative emotions that have not been dealt with at the appropriate time become blocks in our energy system. These blocks will eventually affect the physical body and surface as some ailment. We can treat the ailment, but if we do not address the cause then all we are doing is treating the symptoms and the cause will surface as the same or some other ailment sometime later. A disease is simply a message from our bodies telling us that we need to address buried negative emotions or attitudes.
Disease can also be caused by our environment, (the toxins that we are bombarded with, man made electromagnetic radiation etc)  by the food or other substances we ingest and by physical damage, but much of the disease is caused by problems in our energetic system.
