There are many grades of essential oils.

Synthetic or nature-identical oils are created in a laboratory. They are sold in places like health food or drug stores for a very low price. These oils have no therapeutic value and may even be harmful.
Extended or altered oils are fragrance grade oils. They have an essential oil base but have other constituents added to increase volume or fragrance. These oils may be ineffective or even cause negative results.
Natural and certified oils have passed oil-standard tests but may not contain all of the compounds that go to make up the whole oil. Never take these oils internally.
Therapeutic grade oils are pure, medicinal oils containing all the desired therapeutic compounds. Young Living oils are all therapeutic grade.

Do not be fooled by companies that ask you to smell their oils. These oils may smell better but have had one or more of the synergistic compounds removed to to create this perceived "better" oil.
